Las Vegas, NV August 16, 2008

Orleans Resort Casino-Las Vegas, NV It was another exciting Friday night of boxing in the Fight Capital of the World. Crown Boxing had one of the largest crowds on hand with a standing room only, packed house. The boxing fans were in for a treat. Elvis sang the National Anthem and the beautiful Crown Boxing Girls were on hand.

The nights main event featured "Amazing" Layla McCarter (30-13-5) of Las Vegas and Loli Munoz (8-4-1) of Barcelona, Spain. The women's GBU Lightweight belt was on the line. The man in the middle was referee Joe Cortez. We all know he's firm, but fair. Munoz had the height and reach advantage but McCarter worked the inside, trying to close the gap. There was a little controversy at the end of the 2nd round. Munoz' corner was disputing the length of the rounds as executive director of the Nevada athletic commission, Keith Kizer, advised Munoz' corner that the three minute rounds were on the contract instead of the traditional women's two minute rounds. The fight continued as Munoz was unable to use her reach advantage and McCarter utilized her speed and boxing skills to pull out the 10 round unanimous decision. This was not McCarter's best fight as she told me after the bout, but she decisively added another win to her record. Las Vegas fighter, Patrick Liles (7-0-0, 7 KO's) and Mike Alderete (6-3, 4 KO's) from Albuquerque, were featured in a Cruiserweight bout. This was one of the best fights that I have ever seen. Liles appeared to be in great shape as Alderete came in looking a little soft. Liles came out in the first round putting together some great combinations and dominating the roundt. But that didn't last as Alderete connected with a left hook, sending Liles to the canvass. The tough southpaw beat the count as the bell rang to end the 1st round. The knock down got the crowd excited and to their feet. The fight was back and forth as Liles seemed to go for the knockout, but Alderete always hung on and fought back as the crowd was cheering, knowing that they were witnessing an instant classic. Both fighters appeared exhausted, but they both dug deep and kept fighting. By the 6th round, both fighters were tired but still kept up their slugfest to the amusement of the electrified crowd. The bout ended in a draw as the crowd showed their displeasure. This was one of the toughest fights for Liles, but hopefully there will be a re-match, which I'm sure all the fans will be eager to watch. Other fighters that added wins to their records were Raul Duhart, Eric Bozan, Rodrigo Aguiar and Rodrigo Aranda. We'll be looking forward to the next Crown Boxing event in September.
